Love these old radios I have many
Great radios
I have one and the brushed brass got a few corrosion stain on it that I couldn't get out. I took it all apart and started with a bench grinder/wire brush wheel. I took the brush grooves out as much as I could the the wire brush wheel. I then went through all of the grit steps, 120/ 150/ 180/ 240/ 320/ 400/ 600/ 800/ 1000/ 1200/ 1500/ 2000/ 2500/ 3000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. I may have skipped a couple grits because of the local availability. Be sure to use a hard flat surface like a 3/ 1/2 inch x 3/4" board. Remember, don't change grits too soon or all you will have is a shiny scratch mark from the previous grit. Work the brass down a make it as shiny as possible. The next steps will really make it a mirror finish. Start with Flitz metal polish. If you use another grit polish, that is ok. Use a piece of paper towel to rub the polish out. Don't let the polish get totally dry before you wipe it off with a clean rag. I used a paper towel because believe it or not, paper towels provide a small amount of grit. Polish it out some and then polish it out many times. Now comes the the final step that will make it a mirror. Use a soft cotton or a microfiber rag. Place the Flitz on it and start rubbing. Use progressively less pressure to the brass each time. Remember don't let the Flitz dry out. It will turn black but that only shows that it is working. The more times you rub it out, the brighter it will shine. Don't stop there, get a piece of aluminum stock somewhere about 1/8 or so thick. I took the plastic key paddles off the key and used them as a template to cut out the aluminum. Repeat the previous steps as needed. You may only have to rub out some minor scratch marks on the aluminum. I counter sunk the mounting holes so I could reuse the same paddle mounting screws again. I added a drop of Gorilla glue to hold the paddles in position. Only use a small dot of glue to prevent it from squashing out. You have now turned a nice Iambic Key into a real show piece. Try not to touch the brass with your fingers because it will want to turn colors in those places. I'm going to see how I can add sometime of protectant like some machine oil or something to keep it from turning dark again. I have a picture of the key on my website in the early stages of building out. It isn't a big picture but you will get the idea. Remember, Don't get impatient and miss a step in the rubbing out process. This is not a weekend project but a labor of love that is well worth it! whitehousecomms-arc.org/continuing-education/morse-code-home/
Thanks for sharing this. it helps me with my EFHW antenna
This is a very helpful video for EFHW. Could you do a test and video like this for the End fed random wire antenna design or give us your guess about how the EFRW design should be configured with respect to counterpoise, choke, and grounding?
If you think about it, there is no such thing as an "end fed random wire". The feed point will never be at the end because there is a counterpoise. The feed point impedance will be determined by the frequency and placement of the feed in relation to the wire and the CP. The counterpoise can easily radiate more than the antenna if the wrong length is chosen. Technically you need a full radial field for proper operation otherwise much RF loss will occur in that CP system. EFRW's are not good antennas but of course you can always make contacts with them and if you're in a contest you'll always get 599.
Looks and sounds amazing… I love that old school gear. What is it tho?
Thanks for sharing 👍
This was once considered as the Rolls Royce of receivers. Never saw once except on RUclips. I used to have the HQ-215 that is no longer available except through rare finds, etc. Was one helluva receiver. Thanks for sharing this - Rich, W2FKN
Do you have to be part of the old friends club to join the net, or can anyone be a new friend who later becomes an old friend?
There's no requirements. Just check in. Being old is a bonus.
I love this radio. My Dad had bought one before I was born and I grew up listening to shortwave on it. As an early teen, I caught the radio bug and got my ham ticket. This was my first ham receiver which I paired with a Heath DX-60B transmitter the folks got me for Christmas that year. Lots of good memories there... thanks & 73!
How did you get that disply on the LARGE screen? Tnx for any reply!

The DDS VFO from Qrp labs is a better deal if you don't want to do modulation and you do want IF offset and the ability to pull RF filter sets in and out (like BPF and LPF). It's preprogrammed and zero SMD soldering is required because the Si 5135 comes on its own board. Downside is it produces a 10 dBm square wave that has to be filtered. The filters cost next to nothing to makeup from kits - about 5 dollars each. Base unit is $32 USD plus postage. It's the best Generic VFO on the market and plenty have been built. Outpot must go through a 100 nF capacitor.. You can't use a mini RF transformer post amp without DC blocking, if you do you will kill the generator kit. Unit comes with an encoder .. No relative of the owner who is BRitish.. A proper 6W Transmitter design can be discovered by looking up the old Retro 40 From SWLabs. No longer made but the schematic is on the web. The only hard to get part is the Modulator transformer. It directly modulates the IRF 530 PA which runs in class C. The retro 40 is a fixed Tx Variable Rx design . NO pcbs available However layout and schematics are all there in the documents. Try the RigPics site for the manual or Google radio manuals with the device name. The micro chip Mosfet driver chip that drives the single mosfet is still available too but is ancient. TEF
June 2, 2024..I'm listening to Bob now on 40..7055.6 Says he is running a 3 tuber, (35w) and a Drake 2B receiver. He has a true 599 here in Ontario.. VE3IIM/VE6PG
Excelente this video!! Best regards!
Seems a Copy of hammarlund HQ serie
Your 51S-1 seems to pick up local AM broadcast stations just fine. Mine picks up everything but local AM. I was told I would need a very rare and expensive "55G-1" - Low Frequency Tuner. Is there a trick to getting these to pick up local AM?
If these 49:1 transformers get very warm at 500 watts CW - My question is how much power is lost in these transformers.
Less than 10% which is about what some tuners can loose. Think about touching a 50 watt real light bulb...Pretty hot! Usually there is little or no heat on bands other than 80 meters.
Thank you!!! '73 from Upstate NY
I have definitely noticed that when operating on 12 volts the IC7300 power drops about 40%....I've never looked at the spectral purity but I'll give that a go.
What gauge magnet wire did you use? Thanks!
12ga. 14 works too
Thanks again!
Half windings do not count at all, only passes through the core are counted. A 6kV capacitor across the SO239 is needed for more then 300kW of power, but not for a few kW. A 1kV capacitor is sufficient for 10kW into 50 ohms. Use caspacitors suitable for RF.
Wrong. A half turn counts as a turn if it goes through the core. The crossover turn counts. Wrong about the capacitor too. Try using a little 1kv and see what happens. I've dealt with these units for 6+ years and I've seen the results. Now go away and stop spreading misinformation.
@@n4lq Thats what I wrote, only passes through the core are counted. A half turn through the core IS a turn. And to the math on the capacitor voltage! It has to carry the RF current otherwise it will fail.
Thanks for this video.👍
Nice video!
Talk about a geek's paradise!
Thank you for the great pictures. 73s 👍👍👍👍
With most of what RCA had they stole the patents. Read Empire on the Air. That SOB Sarnoff actually broke down and cried when Armstrong's wife prevailed in court after her husbands suicide because of RCA. I have an AW12 that has a sized tuning condenser shaft I also have the correct speaker and power supply. That is my next project after I get a Philharmonic pointer dial recapped and back to life.
Its still a dipole, no matter what you call it.
Thanks for showing the hamvention! Love the soundtrack
Great video..thanks WG7D

Anybody remember Tim West (N3DRB) on AM many years back.
Would it be possible to extend given efhw antenna ( with compensation coil ) for 160-10m?
The problem with doing that is: As you go down in frequency the transformer needs more primary turns. 160m needs 3 primary turns. 80m needs 3 but works ok with only 2 and 40 through 10m needs 2 turns. The big leap is from 80 down to 160m. The 2 turn primary will be lossy and swr high on 160m. The other problem is one of resonance. Do the math. If the wire resonantes on 1.9 mhz the harmonic will be 3.8 (actually higher) then 7.6mhz (woops) then 15.2 etc. You're way out of band and it simply won't work. The 3rd problem is radiation pattern where the 160m wire has a null overhead eliminating regional communications which is usually what you want on 80m then on the higher bands it becomes very directional off the ends. Overall the 160m version is only good on 160.
@@n4lq tu fer ur advice, 73.
Thank you 73 de pa3geg
